As our week in Hilton Head drew to a close, we were not quite ready to head back home to the real world. So... we decided to add an impromptu sidetrip to Savannah. We have wanted to go in summers past, so we made the one hour trip and extended our vacay a bit! The boys were up for an adventure and exploring a new city was the ticket. The newfound ease of travelling with three year olds made the excursion extra enjoyable for Mommy and Daddy. Life with twins has gotten So.Much.Easier!! We did some quick research on Friday night (thank you tripadvisor.com) and we were set to go...
We arrived in Savannah Saturday mid morning, parked our car at the hotel and headed out to explore this historic city by the water. We started out along the riverfront, taking in the sights and vendors along the water. The boys were mesmerized by the boats and quickly mapped out their ride! Unfortunately, the dinner boat wasn't ready to take off, so we gladly settled for a (free) quick trip across the river on the ferry. It was a warm Georgia day, so the breeze from the boat ride was appreciated. All aboard!
Sunshine, lunch and pralines were on the agenda. Our city explorers loved all the sights and goings-on in the River Market. Our feet and bodies were ready for a little rest after our morning walking on the cobblestone streets. We took advantage of our hotel's early check-in and headed back for a mid afternoon nap. The boys crashed and two hours later were ready to get going again!
After some yummy seafood, we set out again along the river walk. The boys found a boat playscape to play and climb on. We had to watch the boats go by, and of course, pose with a tug in the background!
We happened upon a shell shop where the boys were THRILLED to get a few new treasures to add to their collection. It was so hard to choose just the right ones to purchase! I think that was their favorite part of Savannah. We spent the evening soaking in the history of the city, checking out architecture, relics and tree filled squares. Of course, we had to do all this on the way to get ice cream! Our guys really were troopers, I was amazed. If you had told me last year that we would be walking around a city for hours with our two boys (unrestrained by a stroller) I would have gotten a good laugh! So thankful for the things that come with this stage of independence.
Andrew was able to get some design inspiration with the iron work and architecture. Here my guys are appreciating something together...
And last, but not least, a trip to the famous Leopold's Ice Cream Shop to wrap up our great day! This is the place to go for a frozen treat in Savannah. Complete with the original old-timey soda fountain, Leopold's has any flavor you could imagine in their store. It was delicious!
Cheers for ice cream!
